Today's beauty tip is by the lovely Kiran from My Cherry Lane. She is giving her tips on why grapefruit is a super fruit and why your body will be thanking you for eating them regularly. My mum swears by half a grapefruit every morning, and after reading these tips I will be a convert too! Over to Kiran:
The humble grapefruit...looks like a cross between an orange and pomelo, tastes kinda bitter and quite sour making you wince if you haven't had one for a while but with a subtle underlying sweetness which you can appreciate in time. Its not the easiest of fruits to eat but it certainly packed with enough goodness to make me want to keep eating one a day!
Many of us have heard of the grapefruit diet but I didn't really give it any thought until I started a diet a few months back where I ate one grapefruit each day after my evening meal for about two weeks and surprisingly saw some positive results. It's such a small thing to have a grapefruit after your meal but I feel like it really helped to speed up weightloss and I also feel more full afterwards so since then I have been trying to at least one grapefruit a day.
So when Safira asked me if I had any beauty/health tips this immediately popped into my mind and I began to find out more behind the science. Having done some research I realised that the positive effects I had experienced weren't just in my head but has actually been scientifically proven!
In 2004 a clinic in San Diego carried out a study on 100 patients over 12 weeks. One group of patients ate half a grapefruit (1 portion) before each meal three times a day, another group drank a glass of grapefruit juice before every meal and the third group didn't have any grapefruit. After the 12 week period changing nothing in their diets apart from the grapefruit consumption, the group eating one portion lost an average of 3.6 pounds (with some as much as 10 pounds!), the group drinking a glass of juice lost an average of 3.3 pounds and the group who did not consume any grapefruit lost an average of 0.5 pounds. This shows that by adding just one simple fruit to your diet can be great for you!
- Grapefruit has been found to lowers levels of insulin (the hormone which regulates blood sugar levels), increasing our metabolic rate and therefore burning fat faster.
- The lower level of insulin and high fibre can also satisfy hunger making us feel fuller, more content and less temptation to over eat.
- Grapefruit is loaded with vitamin C which helps to support your immune system which is particularly good during flu season.
- Another benefit of grapefruit is the high level of the fibre Pectin found in the fruit can help to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL).
My tip is to try eating a half a grapefruit or drinking a glass of grapefruit juice each evening after your meal and you will notice a difference.
I'm not sure if the humble grapefruit is classed as a super fruit but it certainly is in my eyes.
